The Friendly Fig + Triple Threat Brownies

I'm very excited for today's post!

Today, I'm featuring an interview with Bianca from The Friendly Fig, a vegan lifestyle blog.  Bianca and Sara are also sharing their Triple Threat Brownie recipe for Halloween!

Morsels & Moonshine: What your blog's about and what inspired you to start it?

Bianca @ The Friendly Fig: The Friendly Fig is a space for happy, healthy humans. I've been a writer all my life, and I have tried multiple times to start a blog and keep it going. I just could never get into the habit! One day it just hit me that, if I do not do this for myself… no one else will! Doing nothing will yield no results. So, I started blogging again. This time around, I am really focused on spreading the word about veganism - the benefits, the recipes… I want to show people that veganism is not deprivation! It is just as exciting, if not MORE exciting. Veganism has allowed me to be creative in the kitchen. It is really a blast!!

My best friend and blogging partner, Sara Day, has been interested in veganism for a while. With her help and voice, our site appeals to both vegans and those who are flirting with a plant-based diet. I really love that we have this balance! I know a lot of people are interested in veganism (even if they are not vegan), so I think it is nice to have a different voice for those who may be making a slow transition to a plant-based diet. One of my favorite vegan quotes is: "It is not about being perfect. It is about doing the least damage and most good." I think this quote rings true with our message. We hope to inspire vegans, vegetarians, and happy humans alike!

Of course, I am also interested in much more than veganism, so I like to consider the Friendly Fig a lifestyle blog. There will be fun, style, inspiration… all that good stuff.

M&M: What's your favorite feature on your blog?

FF: I really love sharing recipes the most. I love seeing what people have to say about it. I love hearing what people think about it after they try it. It feels so good to have others (aside from my boyfriend and family) to enjoy my creativity in the kitchen.

Aside from that, I also like our Style features! I have so much fun on Polyvore. TOO much fun LOL. I could spend hours putting fun outfits together… and then being so jealous of whatever I put together and wanting to shop. :)

M&M: What are some tips for a person who's thinking about adopting a plant-based lifestyle or how to incorporate more "kind" items into his/her life?

FF: I think first and foremost, do your homework. Find out what types of substitutes are out there. Figure out how you will be getting the nutrients you need. If you are not a big fan of legumes or lentils, it may be time to start experimenting with them! You want to make this transition as seamless as possible. Don’t decide to go vegan and then eat a bunch of frozen vegan meals (some people will do that!) Experiment in the kitchen. Try new things. One thing that I did when I started was tried a new vegetable every weekend. I started with collard greens, and made stuffed greens. They were amazing! I probably would have never tried them if I wasn’t vegan. It is so important to have an open mind and be ready to try new things!

When I say start small, I mean really… start small! Try vegetarian for a little while. Sara actually is starting with a program called Vegan Before 6 (though she hates following rules… more on that here). Do what feel comfortable. Do what feels right. The rest will follow after. I swear, I felt a weight lifted when I cut out animal products. I felt happier… peppier. I promise, that feeling will inspire you to keep you going. I haven’t looked back!

The Friendly Fig's Triple Threat Vegan Brownies 

Oven: 350 F
Cook Time: 40 minutes

You will need:
• 1/2 c. all purpose flour
• 1/2 c. wheat flour
• 1 c. raw sugar
• 1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa
• 1/2 tsp. baking powder
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 1/2 c. chocolate non-dairy milk
• 1/4 c. coconut oil
• 1/4 c. pure maple syrup
• 1/2 c. unsweetened applesauce
• 1  tsp. vanilla
• 1/4 c. melted Mighty Maple Peanut Butter by Peanut Butter & Co.
• 1/4 c. chopped dark chocolate (I used this one from Trader Joe's)
• 1/2 c. crushed Oreos, for garnish
• 1/3 c. melted Mighty Maple (for garnish)

Directions:

  • Add the first 6 dry ingredients together and whisk in a bowl.
  • Add the next 6 wet ingredients on the list to the dry. Whisk until smooth.
  • Dice up your dark chocolate into chunks of all sizes. Add to the mix!
  • In a greased brownie pan (I used 9 x 13), add your mix. Once you heat up your Mighty Maple PB, drizzle on top, and swirl with a spoon or knife.
  • Bake your brownies for about 40 minutes. While waiting, chop up Oreos.
  • Once done, add chopped Oreos to top (while still hot) and drizzle your extra 1/3 cup of Mighty Maple on top.
